History of Anna Maria Island, Florida

Anna Maria Island was first discovered by the Timucan and Caloosan American Indian Tribes, and then by Spanish explorers in the name of the crown. It wasnĄ¯t until 1892 that Connecticut native George Emerson Bean became the first permanent resident on Anna Maria Island. He homesteaded what is now Anna Maria City and built his home in 1893. His son, George W. Bean became the islandĄ¯s first land developer and along with John Roser formed the Anna Maria Beach Company. Together they laid the foundation needed to support the city and its residents.

Much of that small town charm of the late 19th and early 20th century still exists in Anna Maria City. Take some time to meet local residents and chat about the city at the post office. There is no home delivery on the island, so itĄ¯s a good bet you will find some good conversation here.
